Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment-Based Parenting on Parental Orientation in Mothers and Problem Solving in Adolescents

Abstract

Introduction and Aim: Adolescents and their families face many challenges, including a decline of parental orientation in mothers and a decrease in problem-solving ability in adolescents. Therefore, the aim of this research was determine the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment-based parenting on parental orientation in mothers and problem-solving in adolescents.

Methodology: This research was a quasi-experimental with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design with a control group. The study population consisted of mothers with adolescents of Isfahan city along with their children in 2024 year, which number of 30 mothers and their children were selected through purposive sampling method and randomly assigned into two equal groups. Mothers in the experimental group trained 8 sessions for one month by method of acceptance and commitment-based parenting, and the control group remained on the waiting list for training. The research instruments included the Parental Orientation Questionnaire (Yousefi, 2021) and Problem Solving Questionnaire (Cassidy & Long, 1996). The data of this study were analyzed using analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS software.

Findings: The results of this study showed that acceptance and commitment-based parenting increased parental orientation in mothers and the results remained at the follow-up stage (P<0.05), but acceptance and commitment-based parenting did not have a significant effect on increasing problem solving in adolescent and its persistence (P>0.05).

Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, psychologists and counselors can use the acceptance and commitment-based parenting method to increase parental orientation in mothers.
